The wait is over…our NBL1 Rangers Men & Women are back in action this Saturday for two important clashes!
We’ll be taking on the Albury-Wodonga Bandits as part of Mental Health Round, with the entire Basketball Victoria coming together to support Lifeline Australia. All teams across VJBL, Big V and NBL1 have been wearing orange as a show of solidarity to support Lifeline and both our Rangers and the Bandits will be doing the same while we work hard to raise funds on the day.
You can now donate direct to Lifeline via SMS throughout this week, to donate text NBL1 to 0488 822 250.
These games will mark the return to basketball for our Dandenong Men & Women after missing out on the NBL1 South’s return due to COVID restrictions against Mount Gambier last week. Players are chomping at the bit to play and we’re expecting some fireworks to start both outings!
RANGER WOMEN VS. HOBART WOMEN – TIP OFF 6PM
The post-lockdown version of our Dandenong Women’s team will be very different for those who have seen us earlier in the season, with several players departing for college including star guard Dallas Loughridge.
We will still have our veteran core however, with new-Southside Flyer Emilee Harmon continuing to lead a young team into battle. Stepping into the shoes of Dallas will be her former Youth League teammates in Nihaal Saunders and Alannah Chatfield who will look to establish themselves at this level.
They will be supporting in the backcourt by veteran Tenaya Sooalo who will likely be on combo guard duties to help provide spark to the Rangers offense. If these veterans can help our youngsters find good offensively flow we should be right in this one!
The Bandits come into Dandenong Stadium off their first win of the season, defeating the Sandringham Sabres in a hotly contested 76-69 game. Lockdown may have been the refresh the Bandits needed and will be hungry for victory. The only thing stopping them will be a distinct lack of height, with their tallest player, Amelia Hassett, just 183cm. That will put them in a tough position to guard star Ranger forward Emilee Harmon. If Em can go off on offense the Rangers will be in a great position to hold home court and grab the W.
RANGER MEN VS. HOBART WOMEN – TIP OFF 6PM
One of the Rangers Men already took home a W this week, with Marley Biyendolo taking out Big Brother 2021! While he and brother Dieuson will unfortunately be unable to take the court due to travel into NSW for the TV show’s grand finale, we will still be fielding a very competitive team led by new star Venky Jois.
A familiar face for many of our SEABL fans, Venky returns to the Rangers after having last played with us in 2012 and is coming off an NBL season with the Cairns Taipans. He’ll fit very nicely with the fantastic Ollie Hayes-Brown, forming a two-towers partnership inside the paint that will be hard to stop!
They’ll face off against the Bandits Men who sit just above the Rangers on the ladder, both teams needing urgent wins if they’re to reach the NBL1 finals. While we’ve still got around half the season to go each team will be required to urgent catch up to the rest of the pack and a win here will really help both.
For the Rangers to take this one they’ll need to slow down the Bandits perimeter stars in Mitch Dance and Lochlan Hutchison who average a combined 42ppg. Combine this with strong inside play from Jois and Hayes-Brown and you’ve got a real Rangers receipe for success!
