Our Dandenong Rangers will be out for revenge tomorrow night as we take on crosstown rivals the Frankston Blues in two huge NBL1 matchups.
The Blues got the better of us in Round 2 of the NBL1 South season, defeating our Women in a 78-75 nailbiter and pummelling our Men 110-76. But this week our Rangers are looking to change to story with both of our programs building nicely.
Our Women are coming off an 1-1 split weekend after a thrilling home win against Mount Gambier and a loss to the Nunawading Spectres the next day. They face a similarly tough back-to-back this weekend, playing the Melbourne Tigers after Saturday night’s home clash.
The Blues are yet to drop a game this season and have notched up three more victories since our Round 2 game, sitting at 5-0 and equal with the Eltham Wildcats. This run has been led by two Opals stars, former Ranger Tessa Lavey and Perth Lynx forward Darcee Garbin. We’ll look to change that record on Saturday night with some exciting play from Emilee Harmon & Dallas Loughridge hopefully pushing us over the top.
While we’ll have to do it without Gemma Potter (out for the season with a knee injury), the play of Harmon will likely be key in this one with the Blues struggling to contain her inside the paint last time. If Emilee can get hold of the the Blues frontcourt defenders we’ll be in for a real chance against one of the NBL1’s title contenders.
The Men’s clash with Frankston was not so close in Round 2, falling behind early and struggling to keep up with some top Blues talent. But the Blues are now without superstar David Andersen after he signed with Melbourne United for the rest of the NBL season.
This out will give our Men a real chance at home, as they continue to build strong habits despite failing to register a win in 2021. They were nearly able to secure a W last Saturday night at home but just fell short against Mount Gambier, with some bigger veteran bodies pulling them over the line.
We’ve seen the continued growth of Oliver Hayes-Brown in NBL1 2021 with the mulleted big man easily averaging a double-double in his first Senior Rangers season as a starter. We’ve also seen some terrific shooting by young shooting guard Sean Macdonald who continues to establish himself as one of the league’s premier shooters.
Should we be able to get both of those boys firing we’ll be in with a fighter’s chance, as long as we’re able to slow down the Blues offense. They’ll be without Andersen but still have plenty of fire power to deal with, led by the Barker ‘Brothers’ Lachlan and former Ranger captain Lucas. Expect some fireworks to fly in this game between two rivals and a few ex-teammates!
