Rangers Set For Must-Win Crosstown Clash Against Knox – NBL1 Round 9 Preview

Tomorrow night’s NBL1 Round 9 event is shaping up to be a huge one for our Senior Ranger stars, taking on two strong Knox Raiders squads in must-win games for our 2022 NBL1 season. To make finals our Rangers will need to begin their second half push in these contests but to do so they’ll need to play lockdown D and protect homecourt against one of our cross-town rivals!

After last week’s lackluster effort our Ranger Women will be looking to bounce back strongly against the Knox Women, one of the league’s surprise success stories in 2022. The Rangers failed to meet their Round 8 opponents head on in that contest last week, falling 93-48 to Ballarat on our home floor and will be sure to do a better job in protecting homecourt tomorrow.

We were unable to stop the Miners from getting into driving lanes and slicing our defense up inside the paint and will need to shore up our perimeter defense if we’re to be a chance against the Raiders. Veteran guards Klara Wischer and Kara Tessari have been doing that slicing to opposing teams for Knox throughout this season and will need to be a focus for the Rangers in this contest.

But the biggest focus will be on Alicia Froling tonight who has been a double-double machine for the Raiders all season long. When Alicia’s twin sister Keeley came to town with the Launceston Tornadoes earlier in the season she tore us up inside the paint and Alicia will look to do the same against our Rangers. To prevent this we’ll need to give Emilee Harmon plenty of help on defense as she battles Alicia throughout the night while looking for her own shot on defense.

Getting a big offensive performance from Gemma Potter will also go a long way to a Rangers victory against the Raiders, with Gemma’s play often a barometer on whether we pick up a W or an L. With Gemma firing and complimenting Emilee Harmon’s consistency the Ranger Women are a different team and one that can push higher up the NBL1 standings.

After just getting pipped by a last second tip-dunk in last week’s clash with Ballarat our Ranger Men will be hungry for victory tomorrow as we take on the Knox Raiders in what’s sure to be a fiery clash.

We’ll welcome back familiar face Mason Peatling to Dandenong Stadium in this contest with the Ranger alumni now playing for Knox at NBL1 level to compliment his Melbourne United role. He’s been a strong pillar of their team so far this season, working hard inside the paint to score in bunches and clean the glass along side teammate Deng Acouth.

But their real driver has been former NBA G-League player Alex Robinson who has been a standout guard in the NBL1’s 2022 season. Averaging just under 18 points and 5 assists per game, he has been the engine that drives the Raiders this season and slowing him down will be the key to any Rangers victory.

Luckily our defense prowess has been one of the Rangers strong suits so far this season, utilizing our length and speed at that end of the court to disrupt opponents from the perimeter. If Rangers like Puoch Puoch, Ellis Biggar and Declan Soukup can use their length & size at their respective positions we’ll be in with a real shot against the Raiders, hopefully another NBL1 Men’s thriller at Dandenong Stadium!
