Dandenong Basketball is excited to announce that Ranger great Shaun Groenewegen will be leading our Victorian Youth Championship Men in the 2022 BigV campaign.

With experience in coaching all levels of basketball, including as an assistant under Darren Perry during the past NBL1 season, Shaun will be a superb guide for our Youth League stars as they start their transition from Junior to Senior basketball.

The role of VYC Men’s coach is something Shaun can’t wait to seek his teeth into as he looks to further establish his coaching career and give back to the club he’s been a part of for nearly three decades.

“I’m very excited and grateful to be appointed head coach of the VYC Ranger Men for the 2022 season”, said Shaun. “Working closely with the up and coming youth from the Junior Rangers program and connecting with them with the NBL1 Senior Rangers program will be a challenging yet highly rewarding experience.”

“Being a part of this great club that has been such a big part of my life and is something I am truly proud and passionate about. I’m thrilled to be able to continue giving back to Dandenong Basketball and help our young players grow and thrive on-the-court.”

Shaun started his basketball life here at DBA as a Junior Ranger in 1992, playing in our representative Junior program for three years. This promising junior career hit a speedbump when he was 14 however, with a young Shaun going through a cancer battle that forced him off the court with his teammates.

However it wouldn’t be too long until Shaun returned to the court, this time as a cancer-free wheelchair basketballer. Determined to not let this speedbump prevent him from reaching his basketball goals, Shaun trained hard in this new format and went on to have an incredible wheelchair basketball career, representing the Dandenong Rangers in the National Wheelchair Basketball League and Australia at Paralympic Games and World Cups.

All of this experience will hold Shaun in excellent stead in this new role with our club, with his background and passion for basketball part of DBA GM Larissa Anderson’s reasoning in placing Shaun in this head coaching position.

“I’m excited to have Shaun on board in 2022. From playing to coaching, Shaun’s had a wide range of experiences in basketball and has a lot to offer our athletes”, said Larissa.

“He has an incredible Ranger story and most importantly is an incredible person. I look forward to him leading our VYC Rangers Men in what looms as an exciting season ahead.”
