VYC 2022 Preview: Building A Strong Ranger Men’s Defense

Elite basketball is BACK and so are our VYC Ranger Men in 2022, ready to take it to the rest of the BigV VIC Youth Championship division with some trademark Ranger defense! Leading them is longtime Ranger coach and player Shaun Groenewegen who knows exactly what it means to be a Ranger and represent Dandenong.

He believes the team is tracking nicely coming into Round 1 with a great preseason in the books. The VYC Ranger Men will feature nine returning members from the 2021 season along with some new faces that have gelled nicely since the team started training in the new year.

“The team has come together really well over the past few months,” said Coach Groenewegen. “The boys have hit the training court hard during preseason and its paying off in the way they have gelled on court as a team.”

Over twenty players from our Rangers program were part of the VYC Rangers preseason including players from our U18 and U20 Ranger programs. They all saw minutes over the eight practice games played during the preseason which is an excellent sign for the health of our Senior Rangers program going forward.

“This year’s team will be exciting to watch, we have size and length across the court, we have guards who can push the ball up the floor,” said Groenewegen. “Watch out for some high scoring games with the great shooters we’ll feature on the court, defensively we’ll be active and aggressive and make life difficult for teams to get into any rhythm in their offensive sets with the length we have.”

Last year’s team was building nicely before the last COVID-lockdown hit, finishing the interrupted season with a 12-7 record placing them 2nd overall in the Watson pool. Coach Groenewegen and the team will no doubt look to use that momentum heading into Round One with a big back-to-back weekend first up.

They’ll kick things off on the road against the Keilor Thunder on Saturday night followed by their home opener on Sunday against the Ballarat Miners. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for this exciting team, make sure you jump on the bandwagon early #RangerNation by supporting your VYC stars!
